How We Do Therapy

Kids at Cookson Hills are provided with multiple therapeutic opportunities, including Equine Therapy (EAGALA), counseling, and horsemanship. These weekly therapy sessions give kids an opportunity to talk with a certified therapist and begin viewing their past experiences through a different lens.

Kids need a safe place to share their heart, grow from past experiences, and gain tools that will help them write a better story. In order to ensure that our kids are receiving consistent, quality, and unbiased counsel, we partner with a local therapy center out of Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Our therapists are gifted at aligning themselves with the child so the child knows the therapist is in their corner. Children are given the time and space they need in order to develop trust. Once trust is established, the therapist and student work together to create personalized therapy goals.

When necessary, therapists, social workers, and houseparents collaborate in order to best meet the needs of a child. So if a child is revisiting a difficult chapter in their story, the therapist may alert the social worker and houseparents, as it may negatively impact the child’s behavior. While preserving confidentiality, this simple alert signals that an emotional conversation has taken place and gives houseparents an extra dose of understanding. We are committed to using all the tools at our disposal to provide exceptional care for the kids we serve.
